If only the fountain of youth was an actual thing. Truth is, the older a women gets, the more beautiful a women gets. Wrinkles are a sign of a well lived life. Yet, sometimes we just want to avoid the wrinkles if we have the power to, right? Here are the ways to reduce skin aging, and remember that no matter what your skin looks like, you’re beautiful.

1. Sunscreen

Full Stop. 90% of skin aging is due to sun exposure (EPA). Protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays, which can cause age spots, enlarged pores, wrinkles, and skin cancer. The minimum level of SPF you should use is SPF 30. And remember that you need to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you go outside and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. It doesn’t matter if you live in Seattle with cloudy skies all day. UV rays don’t care and will still get you. Protect yourself.

2. Get an Anti-Aging Skincare Routine

In addition to sunscreen, you should also add other products to your anti-aging skincare routine to create a bullet-proof routine. Particularly, you’re going to need to use retinoid. Retinoids are topical Vitamin A-based drugs that are most known for their anti-aging properties. Retinoids increase the production of collagen and stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin. All of this reduces fine lines and wrinkles, while improving skin color, fading age spots and pigmentation, and softening rough patches of skin. To see the best results, you need to use retinoids for at least 6 – 12 months(Harvard Health Publishing).

Once you’ve added retinoid and other anti-aging products into your daily routine, you need to actually think about how you do your routine. First, this goes without saying but you need to wash your face before bed. Apparently Kim Kardashian sometimes does not wash her face before bed. Don’t be her. You don’t have millions to spend on fixing your skin when it looks bad because you were too lazy to wash your face.

Also, a pro tip is to moisturize your face before your skin dries. Your skin will take in the extra moisture and the excess moisture will make your skin appear smoother.

3. Stop Bad Habits

We all have bad habits. Luckily we can change our habits at any time. Getting rid of these habits will help your skin appear younger and fresher.

  • Stop Sipping a Straw. You will get wrinkles around your mouth.

  • Stop Smoking. Aside from age, smoking is the biggest predictor of wrinkling in both men and women. You will get wrinkles around your mouth, which is infamously called “pucker lines”. Smoking accelerates the skin’s aging process because nicotine impairs blood flow to your skin so that your skin doesn’t get as much oxygen and nutrients like Vitamin A. Also, many of the 4,000 chemicals in tobacco damage collagen and elastin, which give your skin strength and elasticity. So your skin will sag and wrinkle prematurely (Mayo Clinic).

  • Stop Stressing Out. I know it’s hard to do, but stop stressing out. In scientific studies, stress has been linked to aging because stress causes cellular aging as well as oxidative stress, which causes premature skin aging (Long Long Life).

  • Stop Skipping out on Sleep. We live in a culture right now where people like to brag about how little sleep they got because we all want to be productive with our days. But beauty sleep is actually a real thing because your body repairs itself during sleep. While you sleep, your skin’s blood flow increases and your skin makes new collagen and repairs damage from UV exposure (Healthline).

  • Stop Sleeping on Your Face. Sleeping on pillows that are made of a rough material can irritate your skin and compress your face for long hours at a time, which can cause wrinkles(Healthline). Train yourself to sleep on your back or side or invest in a satin or silk pillow that will not irritate your skin as much.

4. Eat Right

Diet, diet, diet. Why does it affect so many things? An anti-inflammatory diet is going to be key for anti-aging. Here are aspects of your diet you should focus on:

  •  Get Vitamins.

    • B (Health XChange)

      • Whole grains (brown rice, barley, millet)

      • Meat (red meat, poultry, fish)

      • Eggs and dairy products (milk, cheese)

      • Legumes (beans, lentils)

      • Seeds and nuts (sunflower seeds, almonds)

      • Dark, leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach, kai lan)

      • Fruits (citrus fruits, avocados, bananas)

    • C (My Food Data)

      • Guavas

      • Bell Pepper

      • Kiwi

      • Strawberries

      • Oranges

      • Papaya

      • Broccoli

      • Tomato

      • Kale

      • Snow Peas

    • E (Medical News Today)

      • Sunflower Seeds

      • Almonds

      • Peanuts

      • Avocados

      • Spinach

      • Swiss Chard

      • Butternut Squash

      • Beet Greens

      • Trout

  • Eat Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Healthline).

    • Mackerel

    • Salmon

    • Cod Liver Oil

    • Herring

    • Oysters

    • Sardines

    • Anchovies

    • Caviar

    • Flaxseeds

    • Chia Seeds

    • Walnuts

    • Soybeans

  • Eat Less Sugar. Sugar breaks down collagen, reduces elasticity, and weakens the immune system. With a weakened immune system, your body isn’t as good at fighting off bacteria, so the bacteria will clog pores and create pimples. Sugar also creates more testosterone, which makes pores larger (The Cut).

  • Eat Less Salt. Too much salt in your diet makes your internal organs dehydrated, so those internal organs go looking for water and then steal water from your skin. When your skin gets dehydrated, fine lines will show and the overall color of your face will look flat (New Beauty).

  • Drink More Water. Sadly, drinking tons of water won’t have miraculous affects on your skin like getting rid of wrinkles, but it will help you avoid sunken eyes and loss of elasticity from dehydration (Huff Post).

  • Drink Less Alcohol. Alcohol is one of the most aggressive compounds that destroy your skin. Alcohol causes dehydration and inflammation, which can cause wrinkles and facial redness. If you choose to drink, the clearer the alcohol the better because it gets out of your system quicker (think vodka, gin, and tequila) (Vogue).
